Brezza ‘Santa Rosalia’ Nebbiolo D’Alba 2008

And now for something completely different… a Nebbiolo sealed with a Vino-Lok glass stopper. I’m not sure that I’m keen on this closure for any wine, as it appears that you can remove the metal cap (and therefore, the glass stopper) without breaking the seal. It’s hardly tamper proof.

I bought some new Plumm REDb glasses today and wanted to test them out on something suitable. I really like them so far.

Perhaps representative of its closure, this Nebbiolo shows fruit purity more than most from the region. Notes of blood orange, cacao, leather and plum/prune. In the mouth, iron or blood, lively acidity and quite a denseness of fruit, for what is a wine of medium body. There’s a suggestion of walnuts which emerges from the finish and the tannins, which are reasonably subdued for the variety.

I usually look for more delicacy, subtlety and savoury notes in a Nebbiolo. This is likely a good example to ease people in to wines made from the variety. It will age further but I wouldn’t count on it improving.

Good / 88 points
